Cave of Katafygio

In the small chapel of Saint Nicholas, which is located in the village of Katafygi, you will find an underground cave, hidden beneath a trapdoor on the floor of the church. According to tradition, the cave ends in the bay of Myfi. The locals say that the settlement had been threatened by pirated and the inhabitants found refuge in this cave. The pirates couldn’t find them, and the settlement took the name “Katafygi” (the Greek word for refuge).
