Castle of Koskinas (Castle of Nikaria)

In the northern part of the island, not far from the village of Kosikia, you will find the imposing castle of Koskinas. This is a fort, which was built during the 10th century and stands on top of a hill of the homonymous Mount Koskinas.


According to tradition, this used to be the strongest fortress of the Ikaria, thus it is also called “Castle of Nikaria”. The locals claim that it was impregnable and it was conquered only in 14th- 16th century by pirates, because of a betrayal. Gem of the castle is the chapel of Saint George Drogana, which is built inside it.


It is worth visiting this well-preserved monument, in order to admire the wonderful views across the island. The small path from the road Evdilos-Agios Kirikos, will lead you straight to the castle. We would advise you to wear sneakers.
