Christmas in Samos

At Christmas in Samos, all the streets smell of the delicious recipes that the local women cook. The women of Samos prepare sweets in order to, according to tradition, offer to newborn Jesus. The festive table is set with traditional dishes; “pichti” (thick), which is pork with lemon, fried pork, pork with celery and of course plenty of Samian wine.

The morning of New Year, in every house, the residents break a pomegranate, which according to tradition, is due to bring happiness to all family members during the New Year. Also, the housewives offer the so-called “proventa”, a dish filled with cake and other sweets, to their mothers’ in-law and their best men. Finally, young children tell the Christmas carols to their relatives, who are glad to reward them with “boulistrina”, aka sweets and money.
