Marathokampos

The town of Marathokampos, is built up on mount Fteria, 42 kilometers away from the town of Samos and has a wonderful view of the homonymous bay of Marathokmpos and the Dodecanese.  It owes its name to the fennel (“Maratha” in Greek) that flourish in the area. It is one of the oldest settlements of Samos, according to references existing since the 16th century. The initial location chosen for the installation of the settlement was Loukeika, an area a little lower of the current town of Marathokampos. The inhabitants later moved to its current location in order to protect themselves from the piracy, Residents of Marathokampos were famous sailors who traveled throughout the Mediterranean.  Currently, they are mainly engaged in agriculture, fishing and tourism.

Marathokampos is a densely populated town, with narrow streets and traditional houses. Sights of the town are the churches of Saint Anthony, Saint Paraskevi, and Prophet Elijah, the Urban School (a project of the 20th century), and a fount mostly known as “Louga” .

A few kilometers away from Marathokampos, you can find the remarkable monasteries of Zoodochos Pigi of Kakoperato, Virgin Mary, Saint John, Evangelistria, and the older Saint Vasilio. You could also visit the famous cave of Pythagoras, which lies at the foot of mountain Kerkis and offers wonderful views from above.

Finally, for those of you who adore sea, you would suggest to visit Psili Ammos, which is one of the most beautiful beaches of the island. It is located close to the cosmopolitan beach of Votsalakia and the beautiful Limnionas beach, which is known for its crystal clear waters. If you are looking for a quiet beach, you should choose one of the deserted beaches of  Kladdakia, Velanidia, Aspres, or even Saint John Eleimon, known for its wonderful turquoise waters.
