Paleos Taxiarchis
The church of Paleos Taxiarchis was built in 1412 and it is located in the medieval village of Mesta. It was formerly basilica, but in order to be able to accommodate all the villagers during the liturgy it became two-aisle in 1714. During the massacre of Chios in 1822, the Turks sacked the church and caused major disasters that were repaired in 1833.
Inside you will have the opportunity to admire the impressive carved iconostasis, which is decorated with scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The temple was constructed in 1833 and is a famous example of Chios wood sculpture which flourished in 17th-19th century in the Aegean and Asia Minor. In addition, you will be impressed by the beautiful frescoes and the rich interior decoration.
