Period of German Domination
Despite a valiant resistance, which lasted 216 days (in 1941) by the vastly outnumbered Greeks, they finally succumbed under the stronger German, Italian and Bulgarian forces.
On April 27th, 1941 the Germans entered Athens and raised their Nazi flag at the Acropolis, thus signifying the start of the occupation. The last holdout was Crete, which at last fell on May 20th. The three countries divided Greece into occupied zones, with each responsible for one area.
April 30th of that year also marked the first Greek government while under German occupation, with George Tsolakoglou as Prime Minister.
