Steamed mussels with mastic

Steamed mussels with mastic

1 kilogram mussels

2 medium-sized onions, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic

2 sprigs celery, finely chopped

1 medium-sized leek, finely chopped

1 shot ouzo masticha

1 ½ cups tea water

1 teaspoon

Black pepper

1 tablespoon broth

Olive oil

2 tablespoons dill, finely chopped

Wash and thoroughly clean the mussels, leave out to dry.  At the same time we prepare (clean, finely chop) the onions, celery, garlic and leeks.  In a large saucepan, heat olive oil and after which we toss in the onions, garlic, celery and leeks.  Stir fry for 2-3 minutes.  Then add the mussels and mix continuously.

Add the shot of mastic ouzo to mixture and turn off the heat.  After giving it another healthy mixing, cover the pan and let sit for 10 minutes….waiting for the mussel shells to open.  Remove the pan from the stovetop.

Our steamed mussels are ready, and can be drenched in the sauce, sprinkled with dill and topped off with wedges of fresh lemon.
