Agii Apostoli in Chios
The Church of Agii Apostoli (Saint Apostoles), which is located in the village Pyrgos, it is probable that it was built the 13th-14th century. Its architecture is similar to Nea Moni and is an example of insular octagonal churches.
It has a dome and its interior is decorated with stunning frescoes of Antonios Domestihos Kinigos of Crete, in 1665. At the entrance of the Agii Apostoli you will notice an inscription referring to the monk Simeon, who erected again the church, when he became bishop of the island (1564).
Since 1985 are being made attempts for restoration as well as for conservation of the frescoes of the church that continue until today. We advise guests to attend on the 29th of July for the unique liturgy that is in honor of Saints Peter and Paul in the church.
