Chora village
Chora, is a traditional village, of 1.448 residents, located three kilometers away from the Pythagorion. It used to be the capital town of the island, until the middle of the 19th century. It is the birthplace of the Patriarchs of Jerusalem, Ierotheos A, Cyril B and Timothy.

In the village, you can also find many old buildings, which date back to the time when Chora was still the capital town of the island. The most remarkable of those, is the Igemonio, built in the middle of the 19th century at the square of Mesakis, the Metropolitan Palace, the Elementary School, the Cathedral, as well as the churches of Saint Anna, Saint Demetrius and Virgin Mary, which is built in the early 17th century.
You could also visit the ruins of the Mathina Tower (that dates back to the mid 18th century) and the imposing temple of Saint Paraskevi. Only a few kilometers outside the village, there are the enchanting monasteries of Virgin Mary and Holy Cross, with elaborate carved wooden screens and their remarkable architecture.
