The monastery of Megali Panagia, is built in an overgrown location, two kilometers southeast of the settlement of Koumaradei, by a monk named Nilus and his brother Dionysius, in 1586.
It is dedicated to Virgin Mary and in its center, has a magnificent temple. It is Byzantine church with a dome and in its yard there is a small chapel dedicated to Saint Apostoles. Inside, you will find beautiful murals created in the late 16th century and despite the damage suffered, it is still well preserved. The images of Adam and Eve, as well as the beautiful marble slabs that accompany them, have a prominent place in the church. Moreover, the pulpit, the imposing throne, and the temple, are gilded curved on wood and constructed in the 18th century.
The monastery was badly damaged mainly by fires or pirates. It is worth visiting in order for you to admire the fantastic view of the valleys of Chora, mount Mycale and Asia Minor.
The monastery celebrates on August 23, attracting many pilgrims from all over the island.
