Mousaka
Instructions how to make Greek Mousaka recipe!
Ingredients
1 kilogram of ground beef
1 ½ kilograms of potatoes
1 ½ kilograms of eggplant
6 eggs, 1 ½ liters of milk
250 grams cheese (kefalotiri)
700 grams diced tomatoes
150 grams butter or margarine, 1 finely chopped onion
5 teaspoons semolina
Pinch of cinnamon, black pepper and salt
Directions:
Start off by chopping the eggplant and potatoes into thin (round) slices and begin frying them (olive oil) over medium heat. At the same time, we begin to brown the ground beef and chopped onion in a saucepan with olive oil. Strain the water out of the chopped tomatoes, add salt and pepper and cinnamon, and then add this to the beef-onion mixture.
In a separate saucepan heat the butter and then add the semolina to start browning. Add the eggs, already beaten with milk, to the semolina and mix thoroughly until a creamy, even sauce is formed. Remove from heat, and add the shredded cheese to the mix.
In a large baking pan, place a layer of potatoes across the bottom, then a layer of eggplant over that, then pour the entire ground beef mixture into the pan. After that, add a final layer each of the potatoes and eggplant. Remember, between each layer, we sprinkle some shredded cheese across the top. Finally, pour the cream sauce over the entire dish and, again, sprinkle some cheese for a final touch. Place the pan in a pre-heated oven of 180 degrees C for about 1 hour, after which your mousaka is ready to be served!
