Of Great ecological and historical interest is the ancient Ranti forest, which is located on the south coast of the island, on a ridge of Mount Atheras. It is one of the oldest and most important forests across Europe. It covers a total area of about 16.000 acres and is located ten kilometers southwest of Evdilos, and 27 kilometers west of the principle town of the island.
In the forest, dominants are the holm oaks, a protected species of oak, which is rare not just in Greece but in the whole Mediterrannean. If you decide to visit it, you will have the opportunity to observe oaks standing for more than half a century, rare species of herbs and protected species of flora and fauna (such as a species of ferrets, the Turkish gecko, etc.). Towering old trees irregularly shaped, form a beautiful landscape of infinite natural beauty, which you should definitely admire before departing the island.
