Temple of Artemis at Nas - Tavropolio

On the southwestern part of the island, in Nas region, was established the famous temple of Artemis. It was constructed during the 6th century BC and used to be one of the most important places of worship on the island of Ikaria.

It is said that in the past, there was an ancient settlement in which lived the so-called Neades. It is widely believes that this region owes its name to that ancient settlement. Inside the sanctuary, there was a huge statue of goddess Artemis, which has not survived.

The temple was destroyed during the 18th – 19th century and the materials taken from there, were used to build other churches. Next to the temple, on the banks of Halaris River, you can still see the remnants of the old port’s dock, which had been built by the inhabitants of the region during the 14th – 15th century.
